Join MBHB Partners Nicole Keenan, Marcus Thymian, and Anthoula Pomrening for the IP Basics For Start-Ups Lunch & Learn on April 20th.
The presentation will cover the following topics:
1) A very brief overview of Intellectual Property protection: patents, trademarks, trade secrets and copyrights
2) A discussion of the stages of a start-up and suggestions for when to consider IP protection, what types of IP protection to consider and investment considerations in IP protection
3) A more detailed discussion of patents: requirements, cost-effectiveness, and examples (software apps, 3D printing, and augmented reality)
4) A more detailed discussion of trademarks: the different types of trademarks, the importance of clearance searches, and the benefits of filing for a federal trademark application vs. relying on common law trademark rights

Nicole Keenan
Nicole is a partner at McDonnell Boehnen Hulbert & Berghoff. Ms. Keenan has experience in all areas of intellectual property law, with a particular emphasis on litigating and counseling clients on patent and trademark issues. She represents Fortune 500 companies that span a diverse range of technologies to start up and tech companies. Ms. Keenan is also a member of the Startup Companies and Entrepreneurs group at MBHB.

Marcus Thymian
Marcus is a partner at McDonnell Boehnen Hulbert & Berghoff. In addition to overseeing patent preparation and prosecution efforts in the electrical, software, and mechanical fields, he spends about half his time on litigation matters. He’s the immediate past Managing Partner of his firm, and currently serves as Chair of MBHB’s electrical engineering practice group.
